Prairie planting at Willowbank

7/7/2016

An area set aside at Willowbank cottage to showcase the art of prairie planting as demonstrated at the Hauser and Wirth gallery.

At Willowbank our  2015 project,  on a smaller scale , shows prairie planting does not have to involve thousands of plants to achieve a dramatic effect.

In 2016 we hope to introduce another much larger area devoted to the original concept of prairie planting using herbaceous plants and grasses.

Exotic garden at Willowbank

22/6/2016

This area at Willowbank is being used to demonstrate that tender tropical plants, with care, can be overwintered.
Our planting include Tetrapanax, Massa  basjoo ( banana)
Oleander, Agave Leopold, Calistemon (bottle brush) Australian tree ferns.
These plants can then be used to enhance traditional planting schemes.

Natural ponds

18/5/2016

A natural pond designed to overcome the problems associated with a sloping site.

The design incorporates a cantilevered viewing platform, over the pond.

A rill provides inflowing spring water, from a stream running through the garden, and returns the water back into the stream via an overflow.

The pond is a haven for a variety of wildlife , which can be seen at close proximity from the viewing platform.

Herb garden

12/4/2016

A neglected area of a large garden, now being used productively used as a herb garden.

The herbs together with edible flowers are individually planted in containers , giving a quirky originality to the design.

A garden for the blind and partially sighted

16/3/2016

This garden had to be completely redesigned to allow the blind client to move around confidently and safely.
The garden is on four different levels with uniform steps linking each level.  Working with the client we arrived at the most comfortable rise and tread configuration
for him. The handrail is secure but does not intrude upon the visual effect of the garden. Using three different surface materials also helps the client navigate  through
the garden.
The success of this design is  manifest when the client is seen moving at ease, unaccompanied ,  between each level to maximise the  movement of the sun much as a sighted person would.
